Ive been having problems with my mk5 Jettas breaks, took it to the mechanic because I didn't know what the problem was, the brakes feel real soft and slamming on the brakes only brings it to a slow stop.
They said my left front brake worked, but the right front doesn't, and the left rear brake works, but the left doesn't.
That's all they said, didn't tell me what was causing it, since I don't know what is causing it I don't know where to start to fix the problem, and they said it would be 1200 to fix, cant really afford it now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

READ THIS as GOSPEL! ALL BRAKE fluids SPOIL with time! They collect MOISTURE from the air and create SEDIMENT in the brake system! For $100 you will SOLVE your problem with a POWER BRAKE BLEEDER and fresh ATE GIRLING or PENTOSIN brake fluid bottle! Your BRAKE FLUID is now SPOILED< and turned dark brown as an INDICATOR that it needs HELP NOW! It becomes TOXIC and loses it BOILING POINT PROTECTION then turns into water logged TOXIC WASTE and eventually into LIQUID SANDPAPER! ANY EURO CAR PLACE can POWER FLUSH and fil your brake system using AIR PRESSURE and a BLEED SEQUENCE! It is NEVER more than $150 for this "JOB"! REMEMBER al.so that your GREAT VW engien requries ONLY EUROPEAN GRADE full synthetic oil with the nubmers 502 and 505 on the OIL LABEL as well! NO VALVOLINE OIL may EVER be used, it is a SLUDGE MAKER that will cost you POWER and rob you of FUEL ECONOMY as your OIL SPRAY JETS and OIL PRESSURE CONTROL VALVES and LIFTERS get filled with TARRY SLUDGE and get CLOGGED UP! MOBIL ONE 0W-40 is the EASIEST to find, and get a FULL MOTOR FLUSH done first! YOUR CURRENT THINNED DOWN, WATER LOGGED brake fluid is SLIPPING past your BRAKE SEALS in master and maybe in MORE places like in the BRAKE PROPORTIONER VALVES! If you READ your manual it TELLS you to POWER BLEED FLUID every 2-3 years of use! I HOPE that your BRAKE PROPORTIONER VALVE is NOT rotted away inside! It took me YEARS to figure all this out! The BPV is located on the REAR axle of many VW cars! OVER TIME it will leak if the seals BREAK DOWN from acids made by OLD BAD FLUID! Drive over an OIL CHANGE PIT and ask them to check your PROPORTIONER valve for signs of LEAKS! Many OIL ChANGE PLACES can do a FULL POWER BRAKE BLEEDING< but bring your OWN REAL DOT 4 fluid from the VW dealerships! ATE GIRLING or PENTOSIN are the ONLy ones to use EVER! ONCE you spend the $150 or so for this TOTAL POWER BLEEDING ritual you will have PERFECT BRAKES for another 3-4 y3ars of use! NEW FLUID will revitalize your BRAKE SEALS< and prevent ABS pump failures, BROKEN BRAKE LINES and HOSES< as well! WORST CASE is a leaking PROPORTIONER VALVE! Use 1-800-ALL-AUDI or BLAUPARTS for more advice! A PRESSURE BLEEDER costs about $50, but you need ONLY DOT $ from PENTOSIN or ATE GIRLING! Ask at MANY oil change centers if they can do this for you! The SEQUENCE is LEFT REAR, RIGHT REAR< LEFT front, and then RIGHT front! With ABS it is LEFT REAR, Right FRONT, RIGHT REAR, and LEFT front! FORGET THAT $1200 bill! JESUS! People get RIPPED off daily on this planet! <<>> You do NOT need any new parts at ALL! FRESH FLUID will wash away the GRUNGE and SEDIMENT trapped inside your BRAKE SYSTEM and return things to NORMAL again! BRAKE FLUID is TOXIC and CORROSIVE when it is NEW! NO AUTO PARTS STORE JUNK FLUID either! Spend the $100-150 WISELY! BYE NOW! rgmuske@yahoo.com

I remember years ago there were some foreign cars that were setup so that the brake master cylinder would work one front and one rear on opposite sides of the car. Never knew why but I had read it. Maybe yours is one of them and the master cylinder has gone dry on one of the two chambers. That would be because of a leak and it needs to be repaired. You could refill the master cylinder but it will only happen again.

You might get other estimates for the repair work. But it's either stop successfully, or not stop and crash into something. Brakes are, IMO, the most critical component on a car.

well do you have any type of mechanical skills?

Rotors, Brake pads in tact?

Lines in tact?

Booster, master cylinder good? (I could only tell these apart)

Wheel cylinders, alright?

Abs Module working?
