What kind of milage could you expect out of a VW transporter engine?

I really fancy one of these for traveling round the UK with my big and activity gear! There are loads on ebay in my price range (5-6K), but they are all over 100K in millage - is this too much? I dont really know what kind of millage you could expect to get out of them.

Some are as new as 2006, but have 120K on the clock - I'm just not sure what I should be looking out for or hoping to get my hands on.

Any help appricated!
Tony

Service history is everything.

Well maintained Diesel Transporters will do 200,000 plus miles. Build quality is good and they last well.

T4s need particular attention to regular cam belt change 70,000miles/4 years but are good if this is done.

The 2006 you mentioned is probably a T5 (2004 on), these have a cam chain not a belt and should do very high mileages.

Remember that high motorway mileage is better for an engine than stop/start driving such as local delivery vans.

Earlier air cooled models have a cult following but are less powerful and less reliable than the more modern versions. Also many older vans have rust issues.

These days they are best left for VW enthusiasts.

The air cooled transporters properly maintained and new or exchanged cylinder heads at 90,000. Would be good up to 180,000 miles plus, these engines were low reeving and apart from the valve guides wear due to running bit hotter than a water cooled are very rugged.

200k is realistic and stick with the T4 rather than the early T5, heard too many expensive horror stories about them.. Or, buy my vito!..
